Specifications

Importance of Specifications

Since the start of this century certification agencies in the North Sea have expressed concern over the number of gas leakages. These leaks have cost in excess of 5 billion dollars due to repair and replacement costs and lost production in the last decade alone.

There have also been several major material failures onshore and offshore North America and Canada which have highlighted the importance of careful specification preparation.

The impact on the environment and human health and safety has also been severely detrimental due to these material failures.

It is estimated that direct corrosion costs in the USA alone, are approximately three percent of gross domestic product.

Pipeline failures have not only exposed knowledge gaps on degradation mechanisms, but have indicated a need for improved integration between global and local design and detailed specification preparation.

Materials Selection Report

One of the most important documents for any project is the “Materials Selection Report” and this should include details on all of the materials selected for the project and why these materials have been selected. The materials selection report should as a minimum include the following:

Specification Revisions

OSG has a selection of detailed materials specifications which are periodically updated to incorporate new technologies, lessons learned and code revisions. OSG has specifications for all aspects of onshore and offshore facilities including line pipe, forgings, castings, mechanical equipment, electrical and instrumentation, valves, induction bends, anodes, subsea components, piping, welding, and non destructive evaluation.   ...(cont)
