Coatings Technology (cont)

Flow Assurance

Hydrate, wax and emulsion management solutions in these ultra deepwater pipeline systems has also prompted the development of insulation systems such as Pipe in Pipe technology or wet insulation material application, with the added design considerations of high pressure-high temperature design parameters and the method of installation. This has resulted in the development of new or modified coatings and insulation materials to provide the required properties at elevated temperatures up to 320 degrees F (160°C) and also for LNG pipeline systems to minus 260 degrees F (-160°C) .

Qualfication Testing

Qualification testing and product screening is an important part of a coating and insulation material selection process. In order to determine if a candidate coating system will provide satisfactory service under the variable conditions anticipated, attempts should be made to replicate the conditions in the laboratory, accelerating them if possible to provide for differentiation between candidate systems, to establish a ranking prioritization. Finally, for quality control verification, and potential problem solving, the selected coating or insulation system should be analytically characterized to ensure any material substitutions, or chemical changes from service can be detected and identified.
